‘Local products lekker’

FOREIGN Affairs and International Trade minister, Frederick Shava this week implored local companies to take advantage of export opportunities to grow their businesses.

Shava said the appetite for Zimbabwean products has been growing across markets and the outlook of the country’s exports was positive.

“We have seen an increasing demand for local products in African countries and beyond. Buyers are after the quality of Zimbabwean products, which they say is better than what competition is offering,” Shava said.

“This alone presents unique opportunities for local companies to increase exports into traditional markets, as well as penetrate new markets,” he added.

Shava said the government had been making efforts to ensure that Zimbabwe’s diplomatic missions assist local companies to connect with buyers.

“We are implementing the economic diplomacy agenda, fronted by President (Emmerson) Mnangagwa to ensure that we transform our foreign relations into economic gains.

“Local companies must engage with our embassies, who are ready to assist in linking them with buyers and assist with other information they may be looking for,” he said.

On the competitiveness export opportunities, Shava said local companies should be aggressive in market promotional activities, riding on ZimTrade.

“ZimTrade has facilitated the participation of local companies at several trade exhibitions taking place in Africa, Europe, Middle East, and Asia this year.

“For participating companies, these exhibitions have provided them with an opportunity to interact with potential buyers and discuss supply deals.

“As we go forward, companies should ensure that they take full advantage of such initiatives so that they grow their supply network, as well as the visibility of their products,” said Shava.

Zimbabwe’s exports have been growing as linkages between local exporters and international markets strengthen.

This follows several activities implemented by ZimTrade such as facilitation for local companies to participate in international trade fairs taking place in countries such as Mozambique, Zambia, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, China, and United Arab Emirates.

Activities such as inward buyer missions have also been organised to boost the confidence of the international business community in the local industry.

To further strengthen the position of Zimbabwe’s products in export markets, current and potential exporters will, in October, engage government and related institutions to discuss the future of the country’s trade during the ZimTrade annual exporters conference to be held in Harare.

Running under the theme “Inclusive. Diversified. Connected,” the conference will bring together the government, local exporters, industry players, academia, researchers and sector experts to discuss best approaches to grow exports as well as address challenges faced by local businesses.

From issues raised during the Annual Exporter’s Conference, key outcomes that are industry-driven will be produced.

Zimbabwe’s leading exporters in a range of categories will be recognised for their efforts and successes in reaching markets beyond the borders. — Staff Writer.
