THE threat of gender-based violence in Zimbabwe is a continuous battle and requires immediate attention. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in Zimbabwe, approximately 1 in 3 women who are aged 15 to 49 have unfortunately experienced physical violence. One in four women have experienced sexual violence.

Though there has been an effort to combat the issue of GBV in Zimbabwe through governmental organisations such as the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender, and Community Development towards increasing the availability of gender-based violence services, GBV is still a cause of concern in Zimbabwe. In an attempt to address these issues, the Sadc regional coordinator of Empire Partner Foundation in South Africa attended a series of workshops in Zimbabwe hosted by UN Women on 19 and 20 September 2022. The workshop series consisted of 60 people and was held at the Crown Plaza Harare, Zimbabwe with it being the 5th edition of the spotlight initiative: Light-Bulb Moments.

With the aim to eliminate any form of violence against both women and girls by 2030, the European Union and the United Nations collaborated in 2017 to promote, protect, and empower the rights of women and girls globally. The workshop was to educate, inform and discuss whilst providing referral services to women and survivors experiencing gender-based violence.

As the series focus was on eliminating GBV, Carol Shereni, SADC regional coordinator of Empire Partner Foundation took the platform and highlighted the need to implement technology to address issues such as violence against women.

The purpose is to protect those more vulnerable in societies, both women and children. In addition to the existing organisations’ platforms in Zimbabwe, the additional use of technology will ensure safety amongst the vulnerable whilst also helping the social justice system in Zimbabwe as the app allows one to share evidence amongst their inner circle.
